Explore Washington County Criminal History

People who check Washington County criminal history must match the question to the office that holds the record. Wisconsin court files show charges and outcomes, while sheriff records explain an incident and jail data shows custody. A state response draws from fingerprint-linked reports sent by many agencies. No single screen replaces all three. Start with the person’s full name and likely place of contact, then compare the court, law enforcement, and state results. That layered search makes it easier to spot a pending case, a changed charge, or a record that belongs to someone else.

Checking Criminal History in Washington County

A sound Washington County criminal records search uses several official sources. Begin with Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, often called WCCA or CCAP, for circuit cases. Select Washington County and read the case status, charges, court record, judgment, and financial summary. WCCA is free, but it is an index rather than a fingerprint-confirmed identity report. A common name or a similar date of birth can point to the wrong person.

The Washington County court file, police report, booking entry, and Crime Information Bureau response answer different questions. Keep the case or incident number from each result. It is the best link between systems and saves time at a counter. When a record seems incomplete, ask the office that created it to explain the source entry.

  1. Search WCCA by name or case number and select Washington County.
  2. Review CF, CM, and CT results, then compare charges with the disposition.
  3. Call or visit the clerk for pleadings, orders, and copies not shown online.
  4. Use WI-VINE or the jail phone for current county custody.
  5. Order a WORCS response when a statewide adult history is needed.

Three Washington County Criminal Records

The justice agencies along Rolfs Avenue sit close together, but their files do not merge. The Washington County Justice Center at 484 Rolfs Avenue holds the circuit court record. The Sheriff’s Office and Washington County Jail at 500 Rolfs Avenue hold sheriff reports and booking or custody material. The District Attorney makes a charging choice and files the complaint through the court process. One event can therefore produce records with different dates, labels, and legal meanings.

The Washington County government directory shows how the county organizes these departments.

The county directory is a starting point for the correct custodian, not a combined criminal history database.

Circuit case file
The Clerk of Circuit Court holds filed charges, hearings, orders, and the judgment.
Incident report
The sheriff or city police holds what its agency documented at the event.
Booking record
The Washington County Jail holds intake, custody, bond, transfer, and release facts.

For a court case, the Criminal and Traffic Division is in Room 3151 and can be reached at 262-365-5134. For a sheriff report, use the 500 Rolfs Avenue records counter or 262-335-4378. Current jail questions go to 262-335-4427.

Wisconsin Official Background Checks

The Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Law Enforcement Services, Crime Information Bureau is the state criminal history repository. Its public service is the Wisconsin Online Record Check System, or WORCS. The ordinary single-name check costs $15 and requires an account. A response can show Wisconsin adult criminal history reported to CIB, but a name and date-of-birth match is not the same as fingerprint proof.

For self-review when identity matters, fingerprint-supported records are stronger. Wisconsin CIB receives fingerprint submissions, and Fieldprint serves designated Wisconsin programs by appointment. Local law enforcement may also offer fingerprint capture. An FBI Identity History Summary is a separate, subject-only federal response requested through the FBI electronic channel. Its $18 federal fee does not include any fingerprint or channeler charge.

The WORCS account gateway shows that state checks begin with registration rather than an open name box.

Use more identifiers when the form permits them, then read the response’s match warning before linking it to a Washington County case.

Washington County Criminal Case Search

WCCA turns a broad name search into a case-level inquiry. Choose party name or case number, set the county to Washington, and narrow the filing dates when a name is common. Wisconsin case numbers combine year, type, and sequence. CF marks a felony file, CM marks a misdemeanor file, and CT marks criminal traffic. TR records are traffic matters and should not be read as criminal convictions without checking the charge and result.

Open the detail page and move beyond the caption. The charges area states the count and statute, while the court record shows later action. A dismissal, plea, acquittal, or conviction belongs in the disposition. Remote users may see the name of a filing without a free PDF. The official document then comes from the clerk.

Note: WCCA can show a case even when CIB lacks an arrest supported by a fingerprint submission.

Criminal Record Types

Washington County criminal history is a chain, not one file. Police make an incident or arrest report. The jail creates a custody record. The District Attorney may issue a complaint, and the clerk opens a court case. CIB receives qualifying identity, arrest, prosecution, court, and correction reports from the agencies that own each part.

Each record should be read at its own stage:

  • Incident and arrest reports describe the agency’s observations and action, not guilt.
  • Booking records document intake, fingerprints, a photograph, holds, and release data.
  • Circuit files contain the complaint, hearings, orders, disposition, sentence, and money entries.
  • CIB histories compile reported adult events around identity and arrest cycles.
  • DOC and registry records show limited public custody, supervision, or registration facts.

Juvenile records receive much more protection. Warrant status also needs direct confirmation because a docket clue or highlighted Most Wanted entry may not reflect the latest order.

Washington County Criminal History Referrals

The Washington County Sheriff can release its own incident and booking material under the Wisconsin Public Records Law. It cannot supply a Wisconsin state criminal history. The sheriff directs that work to the CIB Records Check Unit or WORCS. This boundary matters. A request for a “full background” at the sheriff counter will not turn county files into a statewide rap sheet.

The official Sheriff’s Office page identifies the headquarters and county law enforcement functions.

Inside a Washington County Criminal Record

The fields depend on the source. A CIB response is built around names, aliases, state or FBI identifiers, arrest cycles, reported charges, prosecution results, sentences, and correction events. WCCA is built around a case number. A jail entry is built around custody. Sensitive identity data is suppressed from public products, and a missing public field should not be treated as proof that no agency holds it.

Name and identifiersReported names, aliases, demographic markers, and agency identifiers at the lawful public level.
Arrest or bookingAgency, incident number, intake time, suspected offenses, holds, bond, and release or transfer.
Charges and statutesSeparate counts, Wisconsin statute citations, class, plea, and charge disposition.
Court activityComplaint, appearance, bond order, motions, plea or trial, judgment, and review events.
SentenceConfinement, probation or extended supervision, credit, conditions, and concurrent or consecutive terms.
Custody or supervisionPublic jail, prison, release, or DOC supervision status, subject to source limits.

A disposition is the result of a charge. It may be a conviction, dismissal, or acquittal. Extended supervision is the community part that follows confinement in many Wisconsin sentences. Those terms should not be replaced with the arrest label.

Washington County Criminal Record Flow

A qualifying arrest starts the local record chain. The arresting agency documents the event, and the Washington County Jail takes fingerprints during booking. Fingerprints connect identity to the CIB arrest cycle. Police send the case to the District Attorney, who decides whether to issue charges. The Clerk of Circuit Court records each filed case and later supplies disposition and sentence data. DOC adds prison, release, probation, parole, or extended supervision events when those stages apply.

The Sheriff’s Operations page describes the units and dispatch structure that support the local start of this flow.

Dispatch coordinates many municipal departments, yet each department remains custodian of its own report.

Public Access Laws in Wisconsin

Wisconsin law favors access to government affairs, but it does not make all criminal record data open. Ask the office that created the record. The custodian may redact juvenile, victim, investigative, sealed, privileged, or sensitive identity material. A requester generally does not need to state a purpose for an ordinary public record, though motor-vehicle-derived personal data can require a lawful basis under federal and state rules.

Key Wisconsin laws:

Wis. Stat. § 19.31 states the policy favoring public access.

Wis. Stat. § 19.35 governs inspection, copies, timing, and allowable fees.

Wis. Stat. § 19.36 recognizes statutory and common-law limits.

Wis. Stat. § 19.37 provides review and mandamus remedies.

Wis. Stat. § 165.83 covers criminal identification reporting and dissemination.

A written denial should explain the basis for withholding. Inspection can be available even when copies have a cost. Public access also does not permit harassment or misuse of registry information.

Washington County Criminal Report Requests

The Sheriff’s open-records notice is the county fallback when no database provides the report. Legal custodian Lt. Jason Guslick or a designee accepts a reasonably specific request at the front counter. Describe the incident, approximate date, place, involved people, report number if known, and desired format. The office allows inspection but does not let an original leave the building.

ItemPublished rule
Regular photocopy$0.25 per page
Other reproductionActual, necessary, direct cost
Location workFee possible only when location cost exceeds $50
Advance paymentMay be required when charges exceed $5
Audio or video redactionQualifying actual direct cost under § 19.35(3)(h)

The records notice reflects 2023 Wisconsin Act 253 for qualifying audio and video redaction costs. Ask for an estimate before ordering body-camera footage, dispatch audio, or a large file. A city police report still belongs to the city custodian, even when sheriff dispatch handled the call.

Note: The sheriff does not provide a state CIB history or protected DOT driver and vehicle data.

Sealed, Expunged, and Restricted Records

Wisconsin expungement under Wis. Stat. § 973.015 is narrow. The sentencing court may order a qualifying record expunged when statutory conditions are met and the sentence is completed. The key decision normally occurs at sentencing. This is not a broad petition that automatically becomes available years later. Age at the offense, the maximum term, excluded offense rules, the court’s order, and successful completion all matter.

A Washington County order controls the circuit court record. The clerk warns that CIB, the District Attorney, law enforcement, DOT, and other agencies may retain their own files. Supreme Court Rule 72.06 directs court handling, including removal of nonfinancial electronic data, sealing, and later retention action. It does not rewrite every copy held elsewhere.

Juvenile files, victim or minor details, presentence material, sealed matters, full dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and sensitive addresses follow separate restrictions. If an arrest lacks a disposition or led to no charge, DOJ’s CIB correction or removal process may fit better than court expungement. Compare the judgment, WCCA display, and a CIB self-check before deciding that an order was applied in every system.

Washington County Criminal Custody Checks

The Washington County Jail does not publish a county-branded daily booking grid. Its official page routes current searches through WI-VINE, and jail staff answer custody questions at 262-335-4427. This absence is important. A commercial mugshot page is not an official substitute. Very recent booking information can change before a criminal complaint reaches WCCA.

After a person moves into state custody or public supervision, use the Wisconsin DOC Offender Locator. A county jail entry and DOC profile are not duplicates. WI-VINE focuses on custody and notification, while DOC results can show a DOC number, institution or supervising office, sentence information, and public status.

County custody now
Use WI-VINE or call the jail, since this status can change fast.
Current bond
Read the WCCA court order and confirm the posting method with jail staff.
State custody
Use the DOC Offender Locator, which is not a county pretrial roster.
Case outcome
Use WCCA and the clerk file, neither of which guarantees present custody.

The DOC locator is the official state-level source after transfer. Confirm any bond against both the WCCA order and jail instructions because a second hold can prevent release.

Washington County Criminal Records by City

City police departments create their own incident reports, and municipal courts handle local ordinance or citation matters. State misdemeanors and felonies go to Washington County Circuit Court when filed here. West Bend, Germantown, and Hartford therefore need a city-level start before the search moves to the county and state systems. Hartford also crosses into Dodge County, so the filing county must be confirmed from the incident location or agency.

West Bend Criminal Records

31,752 people in the 2020 Census. City police reports remain separate from nearby county booking and court files.

Germantown Criminal Records

20,917 people in the 2020 Census. The Police Department publishes a detailed report release form and fee schedule.

Hartford Criminal Records

15,626 people citywide in the 2020 Census. Searches may need Washington or Dodge County.

The sheriff dispatch center serves several municipal departments, but dispatch does not make the sheriff custodian of every city report.

Washington County Criminal Warrant Checks

The Washington County Sheriff’s Most Wanted program highlights selected people. It is not a complete warrant database. WCCA may show that a bench warrant was ordered or returned, but a docket entry is not a live clearance check. People trying to resolve their own warrant should call the court shown in the case and the responsible law enforcement agency. Legal counsel can help before an in-person visit.

The Germantown crime alert page is one example of a local alert channel.

Washington County criminal records Germantown police alerts

Crime alerts can aid awareness, but they do not replace a court, sheriff, municipal court, or DOC warrant confirmation.

Municipal citation warrants are easy to miss if a search stops at circuit cases. The jail explains that a person held on a municipal warrant does not receive a jail court appearance for that citation; the municipal court sends its disposition to jail staff. Check West Bend, Mid-Moraine, or Hartford Municipal Court when the source was a city citation. A DOC community corrections warrant may also exist without a new criminal complaint.
